[MUSIC] Yuri Is Poised to Transcend Girls’ Generation With Her Solo Album, First Scene : '유리의 퍼스트 신' 소녀시대를 넘어, 솔로 앨범으로 돌아온 유리가 무비스타를 꿈꾸는 까닭은? (October 29, 2018)

Yuri does not dance around the subject: She wants to be a movie star.

“The image of myself doing the first scene was material that made my heart flutter,” she said, through a translator, on a recent afternoon in Gangnam, the ritzy business district south of the Han River in Seoul. “Your heart always pounds the first time.” The singer was not talking about her break into Korean cinema but her debut album as a solo artist, after more than a decade in the group Girls’ Generation, which has reigned sovereign over K-pop since the band’s breakout 2009 single “Gee.”

Released earlier this month, directly into number one on the Billboard World Albums chart, Yuri’s The First Scene makes her the fifth Girls’ Generation member to go solo (after Taeyeon, Tiffany, Seohyun, and Jessica). Across the album’s six songs, Yuri sets herself up as the star of her own film. “I wanted this to give the feeling of having seen a movie,” she said. Some of this, like the album’s title, is overt: The EP closes with the tracks “Chapter 2” and “Ending Credits.” Elsewhere, it’s more subtext: Tracks like “C’est La Vie,” according to Yuri, attempt to channel the experience she accumulated as a member of Girls’ Generation, a narrative arc worthy of screen treatment. (Though she didn’t write the lyrics, she identified with its central directive to “do it, experience it”—whatever it may be.)

Yuri was wearing a flocked-dot Isabel Marant dress that, she noticed when she stood up to greet me, had left bits of black fluff behind on the seat cushion. After releasing The First Scene, she had embarked on a flurry of promotions and performances: “I don’t even know where the time went, for two weeks,” she said. “I was really worried that I needed to fill the stage by myself, after filling it with other members,” she admitted. “But after doing it more, it was really fun to be able to naturally express onstage what I had been practicing.”

Seventeen years ago, Yuri—born Kwon Yu-ri, in Goyang, a city just northwest of Seoul—auditioned for SM Entertainment, a management company responsible for K-pop stars like EXO, TVXQ, Red Velvet, Shinee, and Girls’ Generation. (Even at the time, she told me, she wrestled with the balance between acting and music. “I think they benefit from each other,” she said. “When the two are combined, I feel there’s a synergistic effect.”) She was accepted as a trainee and embarked on a rigorous, nearly six-year-long program to mint her a K-pop star. In 2007, Girls’ Generation made their debut with a self-titled album; while it forecast the group’s potential, ending up the 12th-best-selling record of the year in Korea, it wasn’t until their follow-up, Gee, was released, in 2009, that they really embarked on a path to world domination.

But in recent years, the Girls’ Generation members have scattered in the wind, parlaying their considerable cultural capital into adjacent careers as solo musicians and film and television stars. (Though they went on hiatus in 2016, they came back the following year to top the Billboard World Albums chart with Holiday Night, a July release despite its name.) For Yuri, this has, until now, largely comprised a handful of acting gigs (beginning with the fashion-world TV drama Fashion King in 2012 and the sports film No Breathing the following year). In 2018, she has two major TV credits, in the MBC drama Dae Gang Jeum Is Watching, which premiered October 11, and the Netflix series Sound of Your Heart, a reboot of the beloved Korean webtoon of the same title that premiered October 29, as well as her solo album.


Could this be the year Yuri finally transcends the group that made her a star?

“This is Yuri, who is an extension of Girls’ Generation,” she said. As one of eight or nine women in the group, there were times when she found it “tremendously difficult” to stand out: “Living in a group, there will be competition that is known only among us,” she added. But the sum of these experiences, positive and challenging, forged the artist she is now. She has “more robust things to say about the self” now than when she was in her early 20s: “If I told a lot of stories before about some first love of a novice, now I have included stories that could be told by women in their early 30s, stories that are more enchanting and deeper,” she told me.

The Girls’ Generation members who had already embarked on solo musical careers “gave me a lot of support—monitoring my songs, looking at my music, really with a lot of devotion,” she told me, invoking the term of respect and endearment for older or more senior women, “unni.” Hyoyeon, for example, advised her on the photos and jacket art for The First Scene, while Sooyoung and Tiffany helped her out with song titles and the album title. Taeyeon played songs from the mini-album while live on Instagram, broadcasting them to her nearly 13 million followers.

“I really gained confidence because the members gave me praises, saying it really suits me well,” she added. The other girls, she said, likened the new music to “tailored clothing” in how well it fit her. (They have a thriving group text, she said, in which they discuss the serious things as well as their current beauty and style obsessions.)


Previously, on an episode of the radio show Lee Soo Ji’s Music Plaza, Yuri said that Yunho, one-half of TVXQ, had texted her his encouragement leading up to the release of The First Scene. They met, she told me, during their SM auditions 17 years ago; they entered the same class of trainees at the same time. “We’ve been cheering each other on since then,” she said. Her SM label-mate BoA, she said in the same radio interview, watched her dance rehearsals prior to her first performance.

Since Girls’ Generation—and TVXQ, and BoA, and Twice—made its debut, a whole new generation of K-pop stars has started to earn international recognition: BTS, the first K-pop band to top the Billboard 200 and the first to win a Billboard Music Award; Blackpink, who recorded a song with Dua Lipa; Red Velvet’s Wendy, who recently released a duet with John Legend. “I think it’s so amazing, and so fun,” Yuri told me of K-pop’s growing influence.

While Yuri’s management wouldn’t let her comment on the possibility of a Girls’ Generation reunion, she’s already looking ahead to potential collaborations of her own, either individually or as a group (even though she’s only just concluding promotions on The First Scene and filming two TV series). Her dream duet partner? Charlie Puth. Last year, the American musician slid into BTS’s DMs; next month, he’s playing in Seoul. Take note.

유리는 빙빙 돌려 말하는 스타일이 아니다. 솔직하고 다부진 그녀는 지금 무비 스타를 꿈꾼다.

"'퍼스트 신(The First Scene)' 앨범의 메시지는 심장을 뛰게 만드는 어떤 것에 관한 거예요." 그 유명한 서울의 '강남'에서 만난 유리는 통역사를 통해 이렇게 전해왔다. "심장은 항상 처음처럼 뛸 수 있지요." 유리가 말하는 건 한국 영화가 아니라 솔로 아티스트로서의 데뷔 앨범 이야기다. 2009년 경이로운 히트를 기록한 싱글 'Gee' 이후 케이팝을 지배해온 소녀시대로 활동한 지 10여 년이 흘렀다.

글로벌한 관심을 모은 'The First Scene'은 발매 직후 전 세계 14개 지역 앨범 차트 1위에 올랐다. 유리는 소녀시대 멤버 중 솔로 활동에 나선 다섯 번째 멤버(태연, 티파니, 서현, 제시카에 이어)가 되었다. 앨범에 수록된 6곡은 자신을 영화 속 스타로 상상하고 만든 것이다. "영화를 보는 듯한 느낌을 주고 싶었거든요." 그러한 의도는 Chapter 2, Ending Credit, C’est La Vie 등 부제가 붙은 앨범 트랙에서 명확하게 드러난다. 유리는 소녀시대 멤버로 축적해온 경험을 영화적인 묘사로 풀어내고 싶었다(비록 가사를 직접 쓰진 않았지만 '지금까지 겪었던 이런저런 굴곡, 그게 무엇이든지 부딪치고 경험해봐라, 그게 너의 길이다'라는 자기 생각을 반영했다).


이자벨 마랑의 도트 패턴 블랙 양털 드레스를 입은 유리가 일어나서 날 반겼다. 'The First Scene'이 발매된 후 프로모션과 퍼포먼스로 정신 없이 분주한 날을 보냈을 그녀다. "2주가 어떻게 지나갔는지 모르겠어요. 다른 멤버들 없이, 무대를 혼자 어떻게 채워야 할지 진짜 걱정스러웠거든요." 그녀가 털어놓는다. "하지만 하면 할수록, 그 동안 연습해온 걸 자연스럽게 무대에서 표현하는 게 정말 즐거웠어요."

서울 북서쪽, 고양시에서 태어난 유리(권유리)는 17년 전 SM엔터테인먼트(엑소, 동방신기, 레드벨벳, 샤이니, 소녀시대 등 케이팝 스타들이 속해 있다)의 오디션을 봤다. 연습생이 된 유리는 6년간 엄격한 트레이닝을 거쳤다. 2007년 소녀시대가 데뷔했을 때 그들의 빛나는 미래는 누구나 예견할 정도였고, 2009년 'Gee'를 포함한 수많은 히트곡을 통해 세계 무대를 향한 발판을 마련했다. 그녀는 오래 전부터 연기와 음악의 균형을 잃지 않으려 애써왔다고 말한다. "저는 늘 연기와 음악은 상호 보완 관계에 있는 영역이라 생각했어요."

하지만 소녀시대 멤버들은 최근 바람 속에 흩어진 것처럼 보인다. 이들의 재능은 솔로 뮤지션 활동이나 영화나 TV의 연기자 활동으로 분산됐다(2016년까지 잠정 중단됐다가 그 다음 해 빌보드 월드 앨범 차트에 오른 'Holiday Night'로 활동을 재개하긴 했지만 말이다). 유리는 지금까지 틈틈이 연기에 집중해왔다(2012년 '패션왕', 2013년 스포츠 영화 '노브레싱' 등). 2018년 현재는 '대장금이 보고 있다'가 방영 중이고, 솔로 앨범과 더불어 넷플릭스 시리즈 '마음의 소리 리부트'가 지난 29일 공개됐다.


유리는 자신을 스타로 만들어준 그룹의 그늘을 넘어설 수 있을까?

"저는 여전히 소녀시대의 유리예요"라고 그녀가 말한다. 물론 그룹의 일원으로 '두드러지는 것'이 힘겨울 때도 있었다. "그룹으로 살다 보면 우리 사이에서 암묵적으로 벌어지는 경쟁도 있어요." 하지만 그 경험은 분명 긍정적으로 작용했고 도전할 만했으며, 그녀를 지금의 아티스트로 만들었다. 20대 초반에 겪은 무수한 경험은 그녀의 세계를 더 강력하고 미래적으로 이끌었다. "예전엔 풋풋한 첫사랑에 대해 많이 얘기했다면, 이제 저는 30대 초반 여성의 매혹적이고 성숙한 이야기를 들려줄 수 있을 거예요."

이미 솔로 경험이 있는 소녀시대 멤버들은 조언과 응원을 아끼지 않았다. "절 많이 응원하고, 노래도 모니터 해줬어요. 음악적으로도 큰 도움이 되었지요." 효연은 앨범 재킷과 사진에 대해 조언을 해줬고, 수영과 티파니는 노래와 앨범 제목을 고르는 일을 도왔다. 태연은 인스타그램 라이브 영상을 통해 1,300만 팔로워에게 유리의 미니 앨범 노래를 들려주기도 했다.

"멤버들이 칭찬을 많이 해줘서 자신감을 정말 많이 얻었어요. 저랑 잘 맞는다고 말해줬거든요." 소녀시대 멤버들은 그녀의 새 음악이 '맞춤옷'처럼 잘 어울린다고 말했다(유리는 멤버끼리 단톡방을 통해 뷰티와 스타일뿐 아니라 진지한 얘기도 나눈다고 털어놓는다).


이수지의 '가요광장'에서 진행한 인터뷰를 통해 동방신기 유노윤호가 'The First Scene' 앨범을 응원한다고 문자를 보내온 일도 밝혔다. 유노윤호와는 17년 전 SM 오디션에서 만났고, 함께 연습생이 되었다. 그때부터 서로 격려해온 사이라고 말한 그녀는 특히 보아가 선배로서 정식 데뷔 무대 전에 따로 무대에 대해 조언을 해준 일은 잊지 못할 것 같다고 전했다.

최근 소녀시대, 동방신기, 보아, 트와이스에 이어, 케이팝의 새로운 세대가 국제 무대에서 눈부신 성취를 거두고 있다. 그 중 방탄소년단(BTS)은 빌보드 200 차트 1위와 빌보드 뮤직 어워드를 수상한 최초의 케이팝 밴드로 지금 가장 핫한 세계적인 스타로 떠올랐다. 블랙핑크는 두아 리파와 함께 곡을 녹음했고, 레드벨벳의 웬디는 최근 존 레전드와 듀엣곡을 발표했다. "정말이지 놀랍고 뿌듯한 일이에요." 케이팝의 성장과 영향력에 대한 유리의 감회다.

소녀시대의 재결합에 대해 구체적인 언급은 없지만, 유리는 개별적이든지 그룹이든지 언제든 컬래버레이션 할 가능성을 열어두고 있다(지금 당장은 'The First Scene' 프로모션과 2편의 TV 시리즈 때문에 너무 분주하지만 말이다). 그렇다면 그녀가 꿈꾸는 듀엣 파트너는? 찰리 푸스다. 작년에 발표된 '찰리 푸스의 음악을 정말 좋아해요'라는 BTS의 트윗에 몇 개월 후 이 뮤지션은 "BTS, DM 확인 좀…"이라 트윗하기도 했다. 곧 서울에서 그의 내한 공연이 있다. 어떤 근사한 일이 벌어질지 지금은 아무도 모른다.
